How to Start Meditating with Your Kids: Simple Tips for Beginners

Many experts claim 20 minutes of meditation equals 4-5 hours of deep sleep. WHOA! But how do we even get to 20 minutes? By meeting yourself and your kids exactly where you're at. Start small and simple!

So... are you interested and not sure how to get started? Or maybe you want to introduce your kids to the benefits of meditation, but don't know where to begin? With these simple tips, you and your tiny humans can start meditating today.

Start Small. Don't worry about achieving 20 minutes of meditation right away. Start with short sessions and work your way up.

Duration by Age
For younger kids under 5, try 10 seconds
For school-aged children, aim for 1-2 minutes
Teens and adults can start with 5 minutes

Focus on Breathing
One simple technique to try is to focus on your inhale and exhale. As you breathe in, say "inhale." As you breathe out, say "exhale." When your mind wanders, which it will, gently bring your focus back to your breath.

It's a Practice!
Remember, meditation is a practice. Don't expect it to be perfect or work every time. It may take time to see the benefits, but with regular practice, you'll begin to notice positive changes in yourself and your kids.

Start small, stay consistent, and have fun exploring the world of mindfulness and meditation with your tiny humans! And if you want to take your practice even further, check out Metta Play's bilingual yoga and affirmation cards for kids here.
